Course Details
In this course, you will examine basic interpersonal communication concepts and theories and will reflect on tendencies in your own communication patterns. You will link specific communication micro-skills to their intended purpose (empathic listening, strategic listening, assertive expression) and will identify the effect that each of these micro skills has on the both "sender" and the "receiver" when employed.
Through experiential exercises, you will practice and analyze the connection between your internal intent, and the strategic use of the full spectrum of communication skills to build empathy and assert meaning. You will evaluate your experience and application of balancing empathy and assertion in a conflict dialogue and deepen your communication impact through meta-communication.
Online: The online version of this course is highly interactive and follows a pre-determined timeline with both live sessions (also called synchronous or sync) and self access (a-synchronous or a-sync) activities. Participants should plan to spend a full day (8 hours) for each course day to complete these activities. The live session (sync) activities are completed online through a virtual classroom with other students and the instructor. The self access activities (a-sync) will be completed on your own during designated times throughout the day.
