Course Details

This course provides a critical foundation for the training and development of justice and public safety professionals in the contemporary Canadian context. Canada's national project of Truth and Reconciliation requires the training and development of dynamic justice and public safety professionals. This course will provide learners with an overview of colonization in Canada, with a specific focus on the involvement and role of the justice and public safety professions within this history. Students will be introduced to the complex Indigenous systems of health, governance, and justice and the impacts of their displacement through contact and colonization. Students will explore the contemporary context of reconciliation through nation-to-nation relationships and the lndigenization of complex systems in British Columbia and Canada today. This course will introduce the concepts of decolonization reviewing the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the TRC's Calls to Action. This course will provide students with a framework for understanding the role of Canadian justice and public safety professionals within the scope of Canada's national project of Truth and Reconciliation. Students will be provided opportunity to reconcile colonial practices and perspectives while developing concrete skills, strategies and techniques to improve their professional interactions and outcomes with Indigenous peoples, organizations and communities.
