Context/Purpose

Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) recognizes transfer of credit from other post-secondary institutions where the substance of courses offered in different post-secondary environments is essentially equivalent in terms of content and rigour.

JIBC is guided by the following principles:

  1. The primary purpose of transfer is to increase student accessibility to post-secondary education by facilitating mobility between other institutions and JIBC.
  2. JIBC recognizes the BCCAT Principles and Guidelines for transfer.
  3. As much as possible, acceptance of transfer will allow for the maximum recognition of previous learning in university/college level courses.
Policy Statement

Justice Institute of BC (JIBC) provides students with an opportunity to use credits earned at and awarded by other post-secondary institutions to become the basis of admission where learning outcomes align with JIBC courses.

Scope

This policy applies to all JIBC credentials including certificates, diplomas and degrees.

Definitions

Articulation Agreements – Articulation refers to the development and implementation of agreements that provide for inter-institutional movement of students or the connecting of two or more educational systems. Articulation is the process used by post-secondary institutions to determine which courses are equivalent to one another. Articulation can be course-to-course analysis or comparison, but can also involve whole programs as block transfer equivalencies.

Credit Transfer – Credit transfer is course or program credit that is granted by one institution to a student for completion of courses or programs at another institution or organization. Credit transfers may be one-directional or two-directional and are established through formal or informal articulation processes amongst organizations. Credit transfer is granted solely at the discretion of the receiving institution.

Formal credit transfer and course equivalency agreements with post-secondary institutions and with other organizations and accrediting bodies outside of the BCCAT system are encouraged.

Equivalencies may be established on a course-to-course basis or as a block transfer of credits.  Articulation may be instigated at the request of an institution or an individual student.

Reciprocity/Advanced Standing – JIBC recognizes accredited courses/programs from accredited institutions/organizations. Students submitting proof of certification to a particular standard will be permitted to register and complete the next level of certification for that particular standard. Students will not necessarily receive transfer credit but will be permitted to attain the next level of the standard.
