There may be occasions when it is necessary to close a campus due to inclement weather, building emergencies or for reasons pertaining to safety. This policy describes the expectations for delivering a timely and coordinated response to a campus closure due to adverse weather conditions or other conditions that may compromise safety at one or more JIBC campuses, or in travelling to or from the campuses.
Students rely on the JIBC to provide education and training through the courses for which they have enrolled. Consequently, the JIBC has a responsibility to conduct courses as scheduled whenever possible. When conditions are such that access to and from the campus is significantly hampered or unsafe or a condition exists at a campus that would prevent the delivery of scheduled courses and other activities, a decision will be made regarding whether the campus should be closed. The primary consideration in determining whether a campus should be closed is the ability to conduct scheduled courses and programs while not jeopardizing the safety of students, staff, faculty, contractors and visitors.
This policy applies to all JIBC campuses.
Campus Closure – Refers to a decision to suspend all Institute operational services and activities at a campus.
Campus Security – Refers to contracted security services managed by the Facilities Division.
Required Services Personnel – Refers to staff from areas that provide critical services to the Institute (e.g. Facilities; Technology Services; Occupational Health, Safety & Emergency Management; and Communications & Marketing).
