The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) is pleased to announce the launch of its Associate Certificate in Exercise Design, a specialized online micro-credential designed for emergency management professionals. Starting in February 2025, this program provides essential training for designing and executing emergency exercises tailored to real-world scenarios such as natural disasters and public health crises.
“JIBC is committed to building safer, more resilient communities by providing applied, hands-on education in emergency management,” said Megan Mercer, Program Manager, Emergency Management Division. “This program empowers professionals to design, plan and lead effective emergency exercises, a critical component in ensuring preparedness and response readiness.”
The program includes two three-week courses:
- Exercise Design Fundamentals (EMRG-1530): Learn the basics of exercise design, including scenario development.
- Advanced Exercise Design (EMRG-1532): Explore complex, operations-based exercises and evaluation techniques.
Flexible online format
The online program is flexible, offering a combination of independent study, group discussions, case studies, and applied learning activities. Participants can complete the certificate within six weeks or extend their studies over the course of up to 12 months. The program is designed for individuals in government, first response, private organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to develop hands-on expertise in emergency preparedness. Graduates will be equipped with the skills needed to lead and evaluate emergency exercises that strengthen organizational preparedness and contribute to building resilient communities.
