Funding opportunities for JIBC staff and sessional faculty
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) provides annual grants to Canadian post-secondary institutions to strengthen research excellence in the social sciences and humanities through SSHRC Institutional Grants (SIG). JIBC administers these funds and offers JIBC SSHRC Institutional Grants - Explore and JIBC SSHRC Institutional Grants - Exchange up to a maximum of $7,000 for a single project in accordance with SIG guidelines.
Applications for JIBC’s SSHRC Institutional Grants are held once a year, adjudicated by the Research and Professional Development Fund Committee (RPDFC), and awarded for a period of 12 months from notice of award. All successful applicants must submit a Grant Completion Report within three months of the end of the project or event. Please see details below.
Internal research funding plays a pivotal role in advancing the capabilities of justice and public safety professionals. By investing in research initiatives tailored to the unique challenges faced by JIBC's community, we empower our staff and faculty to explore innovative solutions, enhance training methodologies, and contribute to the evolution of best practices within the field. These funds enable us to address critical issues, stay at the forefront of emerging trends, and ultimately elevate the quality of education and services we provide.
For more information on how JIBC staff and faculty can access internal research funding to support your initiatives and benefit our broader community, please visit JIBC Research on the Intranet. Together, let's drive positive change and continuously improve our impact on justice and public safety.
SSHRC Institutional Grants can only be used to fund research that falls within SSHRC’s mandate. Health-related research falls under the mandate of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and is ineligible. The use of social sciences or humanities theories, methodologies and hypotheses is, in and of itself, not sufficient to make a proposal eligible for SSHRC funding.
Research that is primarily intended to improve health, produce more effective health services and products and/or strengthen the health care system in Canada or internationally (e.g., research concerning the treatment, prevention or diagnosis of a condition, the evaluation of the effectiveness of health programs, the development of health management systems, etc.) is not eligible for consideration at SSHRC.
Examples of eligible health-related research include:
