What motivated you to become an Advanced Care Paramedic?
I was motivated to become an Advanced Care Paramedic after working alongside other Advanced Care Paramedics who I admired and respected. I felt inspired by their confidence, professionalism, and intelligence and knew that I wanted to one day practice at their level. Additionally, I was keen for more knowledge, additional skills, and the ability to provide a higher level of care to individuals in my community.
What was your best experience in the program?
My favorite part of the experience was the relationships I built with my classmates. Our class became very close, and we were supportive of each other through the highs and lows of the program. We all worked together and utilized our strengths to make sure that everyone was successful. What started as study groups turned into lifelong friends who continue to support me.

How supportive have faculty members been?
The faculty was outstanding and I could not have asked for a better group of people to support me through the process. The instructors, support staff, and program manager all had a common goal of supporting our learning and ensuring we were successful. Every part of the experience was structured and focused on preparing me for completion of the program, licensing with Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board ( EMALB), and my practice as an Advanced care Paramedic.
What was the most rewarding aspect of your Practice Education experience?
The most rewarding part of my practice education experience was the improvements I made as I progressed through each term. My preceptors facilitated a safe and supportive environment for me to take the knowledge and skills that I learned in the classroom and apply them in the real world. Not only did they instill in me their experience and wisdom, but they also allowed me to learn from my own mistakes which was invaluable.
What are your future plans and how has the program prepared you?
After finishing the program I was successful in licensing and was then signed off for independent Advanced Care paramedic Practice with BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS). I currently work as an Advanced Care Paramedic in Victoria where I continue to learn and develop my practice. At the present time I am focused on enjoying my role while also maintaining work/life balance. The program gave me the confidence to know that I can be successful and if I decide to advance my education in the future I feel prepared to do so. Being an Advanced Care Paramedic allows many opportunities for advancement which is a huge advantage for career progression.
What advice would you offer to students thinking of coming to study here?
I would encourage anyone interested in Advanced Care Paramedic practice to study at the JIBC. The structure of the program and level of education will allow you to be successful as you transition from a student into independent practice as an Advanced Care Paramedic. My advice would be to work hard, form relationships with fellow students and trusted mentors, and allow yourself to learn from your mistakes. The program can be challenging but it is 100% worth the effort. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
