Fire & Safety Studies Diploma
Who Should Take This Degree?
The Fire & Safety Studies Diploma will assist you, as a member of the fire service, achieve your career and educational goals while supporting the broader goal of enhanced community safety.
Overview
If you would like to further your career in the fire service then you recognize the need to obtain higher level academic credentials. The Fire & Safety Studies Diploma builds on the learning you have obtained in either the Fire Officer Certificate Program or the Fire Prevention Officer Certificate to assist you in achieving your career goals. This diploma effectively prepares students to assume more senior officer positions.
In addition, students who meet the admission requirements and successfully complete the Fire and Safety Studies Diploma (FSSD) will have earned 60 credits toward the Bachelor of Public Safety Administration and will be eligible to enter into year 3 of the degree if they choose to continue their studies.
Program Objectives
Students will develop the knowledge and skills to:
- Be effective managers
- Become both organizational and frontline leaders
- Think critically
- Manage human resources in our increasingly diverse society
- Successfully lead organizational projects
Admission Requirements
- English 12 with a minimum grade of a "C"
- Math 11 with a minimum grade of a "C"
- Certificate from an accredited (ProBoard and/or IFSAC) institution for NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I and II Professional Qualifications is required if using Fire Officer Certificate for Year 1.
Applicants the must meet all institutional and program specific entry requirements according to the JIBC admissions policy.
The Program Manager of Executive Officer Programs has responsibility for all admission requirements. Other equivalents may be considered upon approval of the Registrar.
Courses
The majority of courses in this program area are offered in an online format using Black Board. There some exceptions if you are completing either the FOCP or the FPOC for your first year. Please see those respective program areas for more details on specific course formats
Year 1
There are three ways that you can complete year one of the diploma:
- Complete the 30 credit Fire Officer Certificate Program or;
- Complete the 30 credit Fire Prevention Officer Certificate or;
- Based on other education that you have completed, apply for Recognition of Prior Learning for year one of the degree. Please contact us if you wish to explore this option.

Submit your completed Application Form along with a copy of your High School transcript showing that you have the admission requirements and the $75 ($125 for International Students) non-refundable application fee by:

We recommend that you apply at least two months before you wish to take your first class. Once an applicant is accepted, we suggest registering as far as possible before the classes begin as the number of seats is limited.
